DATE: June 11, 2019 SUBJECT: 2019 PARKS AND RECiATION •UMMER CAMP The school bell has rung, and the summer fun has begun! The Parks and Recreation Department is proud to share with the Mayor and Commission all the exciting activities that we have in store for our campers this summer. The popularity of the City's summer camp offerings continues to grow as over 1,100 children and teens, to date, have signed up to enjoy a packed schedule of exciting activities ranging in arts and crafts, swimming and sports, special events, ice skating and so much more. General summer camp began on June 10, 2019 and runs through August 15, 2019 at the following locations: • Camp for Tots (half day, 8-week program for children ages 3-4) • Flamingo Park (grades K-5) • Muss Park (grades K-3) • Nautilus Middle School (grades 6-12) • North Shore Park and Youth Center(grades K-5) • Normandy Isle Park (grades 6-12) • Scott Rakow Youth Center(grades 4-12) The Department is proud to offer a low-cost, high quality, summer experience for campers. No Miami Beach child is excluded from participating based on their inability to pay. Over 500 qualifying participants have received financial aid this summer. Sibling discount rates and flexible payment plan options are available as well. The City firmly believes in the importance of including all children, regardless of abilities, into regularly scheduled programs and activities. As such, the Department is very proud to have established one of the first Inclusion in Recreation programs in South Florida,which uses a holistic approach by providing children with special needs a hands-on support system. In addition to working with the schools, Parks and Recreation team members meet with the parents of children with special needs to address how to best include them in programming and provide these children with Inclusionary Aides for one-on-one support. This summer, 35 children with special needs are having a blast thanks to this unique program. For those campers looking to focus on a specific interest, pursue a hobby, develop a craft or learn something new, a variety of different specialty camps are being offered. Over 500 participants have joined camps such as: • Coding • Culinary Kids (cooking skills) • Fine Arts Camp Page 1 of 2 • Gymnastics Camp • Ice Skating Camp • Jr. Fire Academy Camp (with MBFD) • Jr. Golf • Jr. Guard Start • Jr. Police Academy Camp (with MBPD) • Jr. Tennis • Mad Scientists • SoBe Great Adventures (mountain biking, horseback riding, paddle boarding) • Sports Camp • Water Sports Camp The Parks and Recreation Department is committed to ensuring our participants create long- lasting memories which capture the fun to be had at our programs and the friendships that will be made along the way.
