LTC# TO: Mayor Dan Gelber and Members of the City Commission FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager DATE: July 22, 2019 SUBJECT: Motion from the Police Citizen Relations Committee July 16,2019 Meeting The purpose of this Letter to the Commission (LTC) is to inform the Mayor and the Commission of a motion made by the Police Citizen Relations Committee at their July 16, 2019 meeting. Background: The Miami Beach Police Department ("MBPD") continually aspires to reduce crime and the fear of crime through innovation and positive partnerships with the community. To support the public safety goals of MBPD, it is the purpose of the Police/Citizens Relations Committee ("Committee") to, in part, endorse programs that will enhance the well-being of residents and visitors. The MBPD, under the new leadership of Chief Rick Clements and Deputy Chief Wayne Jones, is in favor of improving its relationship with the Miami Beach Crime Prevention & Awareness Facebook Group ("Facebook Group"). The mission ofthe Facebook Group is to be a grassroots independent group of Miami Beach residents and stakeholders focused on crime prevention and awareness. At its July meeting, the Committee adopted a motion supporting a strong relationship between MBPD and the Facebook Group. By working with the Facebook Group, MBPD aims to further expand open lines of communication with residents to prevent crime and enhance public safety. It is therefore currently in the best interest of the City of Miami Beach for there to be a solid working relationship between MBPD and the Facebook Group. Motion: A motion of the Police Citizen Relations Committee: (1) supporting the reestablished relationship between the Miami Beach Police Department and the Miami Beach Crime Prevention Facebook Group and (2) encouraging its continued growth and strength. Motion stated by Chairman Alex Fernandez; Moved as amended for the Chairman by Committee Member Julian Linares; and, Seconded by Chairman Alex Fernandez. Adopted by acclamation The original motion stated by Chairman Fernandez recommended that MBP D consider an informal written agreement establishing terms for cooperation with the Face book Group. It was explained that MBP D and the Face book Group regularly communicate and that a relationship exists. The motion was amended by the Chairman and adopted as reflected above. JLM:RMC:tr
