SUBJECT: Super Bowl Load In / Volleyball Court Relocation
The purpose of this Letter to the Commission ("LTC") is to update the Mayor and the
Commission regarding the status of the volleyball court relocation as part of the Super
Bowl LIV load-in in Lummus Park.
Fox Sports is the official broadcaster of Super Bowl LIV, and as such is bringing the largest
broadcast studio set up in the history of their involvement with the Super Bowl (renderings
attached). Due to the size of this set up, there was no suitable, clear space for this
production build except for the City owned property located in the area of Lummus Park
utilized by the volleyball courts. Other broadcasters located in the Lummus Park area
include ESPN and Univision.
Fox Sports load in began on Monday January 6, 2020, with members of the Special Events
Department on site to ensure permit adherence. Fox Sports will be broadcasting live for
12-14 hours a day from January 24, 2020— February 2, 2020 with programming including
but not limited to Fox and Friends, NFL Films Presents, WWE Backstage, Fox Nation,
Race Hub, America's Newsroom, Super Bowl Pre Game and Super Bowl Opening Night
to name a few. The backdrop of every one of these broadcasts will be iconic Ocean Drive,
featuring our unmistakable Art Deco Architecture. The anticipated international media
exposure for this broadcast with Ocean Drive as the backdrop will be well over
$10,000,000.00.
Due to the necessity of utilizing this space, the administration has worked with the
volleyball community via Special Events Community Meetings, written correspondence
and phone calls to ensure that all requirements as set forth in the City of Miami Beach's
Special Event Guidelines pertaining to safety, environmental protection and cleanliness
will be upheld. The Tourism and Culture department has dedicated a Field Supervisor to
the Load In and execution of this permit and will ensure that all permit requirements as set
forth in the Commission approved guidelines are met regarding sand sifting, generator /
fuel protections, and sanitation standards / garbage removal.
In addition to the volleyball courts at 12th Street, which will remain in full use without
interruption, the administration has worked with the State of Florida and beachfront
concession providers to secure a location directly on the beachfront behind Marjory
Stoneman Douglas Park, between 2nd and 3rd Streets, to install an additional four beach
volleyball courts. These courts will be operational by end of business day Friday January
10, 2020.
