Take Part in the Release of a Cooper’s Hawk Rescued in Miami Beach
—Mayor Gelber to Assist in Release of Orphaned Nestling Raised at Seabird Station—
WHO/WHAT: In partnership with Pelican Harbor Seabird Station, the City of Miami
Beach invites you to celebrate a remarkable journey of survival as they
release a rescued Cooper’s Hawk into the wild on Thursday, July 25 at
10:30 a.m.
On May 16, the orphaned nestling was found on the ground at
Normandy Shores Golf Course in Miami Beach. The parents and nest
could not be located, so it was carefully transferred and raised at the
Pelican Harbor Seabird Station with five other orphaned Cooper’s
Hawks.
The rescued bird successfully completed flight conditioning and live prey
school at the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center. Cooper’s Hawk are one of
the most common raptor species found in South Florida. With 49
admissions, the species is the fifth most common native bird treated at
the seabird station in 2018. While most hawks migrate through Miami
Beach during spring and fall migration, Cooper’s Hawks are year-round
residents, nesting here and living 12 years or more.
