SUBJECT: Upcoming Reforestation Project for Normandy Shores and Normandy Isles
I am pleased to announce the upcoming reforestation efforts taking place in the Normandy Isles
and Normandy Shores Neighborhoods. This project is funded through the GO Bond Reforestation
Project and through a grant from Miami-Dade County's Neat Streets Miami. This project will
enhance the tree canopy with over 250 trees.
Urban Forestry will begin dispersing door hangers throughout the neighborhoods to advise
residents of the project. Planting will commence the week of August 10 and will continue
throughout the months of August and September pending on weather. This year's reforestation
efforts in these neighborhoods would expand on the multi-year reforestation efforts that have
added over 250 new trees within our north beach communities over the last three years. The
newly planted trees will be a combination of Bridal Veil (Caesalpinia granadillo), Wild Tamarinds
(Lysiloma bahamensis), Gumbo Limbos (Bursera simaruba), Green Buttonwoods (Conocarpus
erectus) and several other Florida-friendly tree species that provide shade and beautify the
community.
The newly planted trees will be maintained for a period of one year. At the end of one year all
supports will be removed and minor structural pruning will be conducted to promote sound canopy
growth as the trees mature.
In addition to creating cooler more walkable streets, a healthy tree canopy also intercepts millions
of gallons of urban stormwater runoff citywide, reduces carbon dioxide, conserves electricity and
improves overall health for the city's residents.
As one of the city's most important natural resources, our urban forest continues to grow and
flourish thanks to the strategic management of the Urban Forestry Division. Through untiring tree
preservation efforts, ensuring proper tree mitigation in development projects, supporting
enhanced tree canopy in future infrastructure projects, and advocating for a sustainable
management approach of our urban tree canopy the Urban Forestry Division is providing the
foundation for a more walkable, resilient, and livable community.
