Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager September 1, 2020 SU B JEC T: Miami Beach Convention Center - LEED® Silver Certification The purpose of this L TC is advise the Mayor and Commission that the Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC) has officially achieved LEED® Silver certification. As a "resilient city", LEED certification requirements are a critical policy that has been implemented to promote energy-efficient and environmentally friendly infrastructure. With 500,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space, a 60,000 sq. ft. Grand Ballroom, up to 84 breakout rooms, almost 2,100 miles of IT cabling, and $7.1 million worth of art curated by Art in Public Places, the expansive project still manages to offer the following environmental benefits: • Expanded tree canopy coverage with 1,300 newly planted Florida-friendly trees. • Preserved more than 100 existing trees. • Restored mangrove habitats and other native vegetations along Collins Canal Park. • Increased water efficiencies from faucets and flush features that reduce water consumptions by 36%, which saves approximately 115,000 gallons of water a year. • Reduced the area's heat island effect from transforming 6.2 acres of asphalt parking lot into a public park and green space. • Connected fuel-efficient transportation options, including charging stations for electric vehicles as well as easy access to public transportation and pedestrian routes. • Eliminated project waste, with 90% of construction waste re-used or recycled within the project. (i.e. 75% of the structure's steel was recycled). • Decreased power by 15%, with LED light fixtures, sun-shading "fins" that prevent solar heat gain, and sensor power technologies. • Treated rainwater runoff, which is captured and decontaminated in an on-site water quality management system that treats 100% of site rainfall. • Elevated ground floor that protects the building from flooding, and critical building systems and electronics such as emergency generators, electrical panels and communications systems, installed above floor level requirements.
