Motion by the Human Rights Committee
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (L TC) is to inform the Mayor and the Commission of a motion made
by the Human Rights Committee at their meeting on July 13, 2020.
MOTION: At the July 13, 2020 Human Rights Committee meeting, the committee passed a motion
recommending to the Mayor and City Commission legislation that would further the purpose of eliminating and
preventing discrimination in employment and public accommodations because of race, color, national origin,
religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, marital and familial status, or age.
As a committee, we state unequivocally that racism in any form is unacceptable. We are outraged about the
lack of equality, justice, and freedom across our country.
• We recognize our responsibility to dismantle racist systems, policies, and attitudes that
contributed to the brutal and tragic and unnecessary deaths of George Floyd, Breanna Taylor,
Ahmaud Arbery, and too many others.
• We are committed to supporting individuals and communities that are negatively impacted by
structural, unconscious, or overt racism.
• We recognize that we must speak out and denounce all acts of murder, violence,
marginalization and repression because of one's skin color.
We support the City of Miami Beach's willingness sign the pledge from the organization My Brother's Keeper
that commits to redefine public safety so that it recognizes the humanity and dignity of every person and
consider that the city identify and announce partnerships in 2020 that will make the biggest difference in
advancing social justice and support the Miami Beach Police Department in implementing unconscious bias
training in their protocol.
From our Committee to the individuals and families that we serve, we are strengthened by our diversity. We
stand against racism and we honor all voices.
