I am pleased to announce that the City of Miami Beach is collaborating with Volunteercleanup.org
in the 35"" Annual International Coastal Cleanup Day. This event is an initiative launched by the
Ocean Conservancy that brings together volunteers to collect litter and debris on inland roadsides,
coastal areas, lakes and waterways.
The mission of Ocean Conservancy is to educate the
public on issues of maritime pollution and to use the
information collected from the cleanup to help change
policy. Last year, 1 million volunteers from this
international event collected over 20 million pounds of
litter. Miami-Dade had a total of 2,815 participants that
collected 14,104 pounds of trash.
In past, the event was held on a single day. However, the
format has been adjusted for 2020 to keep all participants
safe and to follow social distancing guidelines. This year
the event will be held over a six-week period from
September 16 to November 1. Volunteers are being
encouraged to host their own "solo" cleanups but also
have the option to register for a small cleanup group with
a maximum of 10 people.
To help further support this effort, the city's Ocean Rescue
Headquarters and the 53 Street Ocean Rescue Sub-
station will serve as pick up spots for participants to pick
up bags and gloves for their independent cleanups. Participants can learn more about the event
