Morales, City Manager,I DATE: December 3, 2020 SUBJECT: Art Week Miami Beach 2020 - 'ublic Voting for No Vacancy - Legacy Purchase Program The purpose of this Letter to the Commission ("LTC") is to provide you with an update on Art Week Miami Beach 2020. With offerings ranging from public art exhibitions to socially distanced theatre, Art Week Miami Beach 2020 was conceived in light of the socially distant world born from the COVID-19 pandemic. Highlights of the week include the City of Miami Beach produced No Vacancy, Miami Beach, a juried art competition that celebrates 10 artists in 1 O of Miami Beach's famed hotels from December 2-12, 2020. For the inaugural edition of No Vacancy, $25,000 in prizes will be awarded, divided between a $5,000 prize determined by public vote and a $20,000 prize awarded by a jury of art experts. On Tuesday, December 1, 2020 the New York Times featured the program in an article entitled "In Miami Beach, the Art Scene Has Moved Outdoors". We are pleased to announce the $20,000 Juror's Choice has been awarded to Die-Cast, who is presenting a digital-live hybrid installation performance piece entitled Temporary Occupancy in the alleyway of The Betsy Hotel. We encourage you to cast your vote for the $5,000 People's Choice Award, which will be announced on December 12, 2020. The City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places program will continue its second version of the Legacy Purchase Program through OVR: Miami Beach', Art Basel's December edition of Online Viewing Rooms, a virtual platform connecting the world's leading galleries with our global network of collectors and art enthusiasts. This year, due to the global COVID-19 Pandemic, the Art in Public Places Committee has elected to purchase a work from a Miami-Dade County based gallery, an artist who lives and/or works in Miami-Dade County, and/or by an artist who has a significant connection to the Miami- Dade. The Art in Public Places Committee has selected three (3) works of art to put to a public vote via online social channels at approximately 10 AM on Friday, December 4" to 8PM on Saturday, December 5, The City will announce the work of art with the most votes on Sunday, December 6, 2020. We encourage you to cast your yote for your favorite artwork.
