SUBJECT: STEAM Plus Program 2020-21 Final Report
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to update the Mayor and City Commission on the status
of our STEAM Plus Program in Miami Beach public schools for the 2020-21 school year. The
program, referred to as the STEAM Plus initiative, is intended to inspire students to engage and
prepare in science, technology, engineering , arts, and mathematics by working with our cultural
anchors to infuse theatre, visual arts, dance, and music into traditional curriculum offerings .
Developing a relationship with the arts helps learners to develop creative problem-solving skills,
present difficult concepts visually and help children with the development of motor skills, language
skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking and inventiveness.
The program , now in its third year, continues to expand and positively impact our Miami Beach
youth . The Bass continues to serve as the bridge between the public schools and the partnering
cultural institutions. Despite the challenges presented due to COVID-19, the program was adapted
to allow for virtual interactions . Notable accomplishments of the program during the 2020-21 school
year include the following :
• 4,310 Students Participating (47% increase from prior year)
• 254 Unique Interactions through 209 Classrooms
• 10 Cultural Partnerships
• 7 Public Schools
• 1,127 Instructional Hours
• 45 Teaching Artists
The STEAM Plus Program continues to support the Miami-Dade County Public School STEAM
designations resulting in six (6) Miami Beach schools earning gold status and one (1) earning silver
status . Survey data from youth participants reflects a high level of satisfaction with the program,
including feedback from students who agree or strongly agree with the following :
• 97% students enjoyed the project they did with their partnering organization
• 98% students enjoyed attending class on the days the partner organization visited
• 98% student overall satisfaction with the STEAM program

supports our strategic priority to be known for educational (K-12) excellence. If you have any

From October 2020 through June 2021, the City
of Miami Beach Commission and Mayor Dan
Gelber, in partnership with the Miami-Dade
County Public Schools System (M-DCPS),
approved funding for the STEAM Plus program,
which integrates arts and culture into the core
curriculum of local public schools.
The Bass continued to manage partnerships
between cultural organizations and Miami Beach
public schools, emphasizing the integration of
the arts into core subjects such as science,
engineering and math, which helps public
schools attain their STEAM designation. The Bass
serves as a bridge between the City of Miami
Beach's schools and the partnering institutions,
thus alleviating pressure on the STEAM
coordinator at each school. Additional support is
also provided by The Bass' manager who works closely with the schools in
preparing for their M-DCPS STEAM designation visits, STEAM partnerships,
STEAM Showcases, STEAM designation applications and submissions to ensure
they receive a gold, silver, bronze or participant designation.
The 2020-2021 STEAM Plus program featured a total of 10 total cultural
organizations: The Bass Museum of Art, Hack Shack, Helping Hands (formerly
Miami Beach Bots), Jewish Museum of Florida -FIU, Miami Beach Botanical
Gardens, Miami City Ballet, Miami New Drama, New World Symphony, Wolfsonian
-FIU and Young Musicians Unite. These cultural institutions were paired with a
total of 7 Miami Beach public schools: Biscayne Beach Elementary, Miami Beach
Fienberg Fisher K-8 Center, Miami Beach Senior High, Nautilus Middle, North
Beach Elementary, South Pointe Elementary and Treasure Island Elementary. The
partnership between Miami's cultural institutions and the city's local public
schools helps to create the next generation of inventors, explorers, innovators,
artists and leaders.

By engaging students around the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering,
Art and Math, the STEAM Plus program aims to spark an interest in and life-long
appreciation of the arts and sciences in children from an early age. Developing a
relationship with the arts helps learners to develop creative problem-solving
skills, present difficult concepts visually and help children with the development
of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking and
inventiveness.
The longevity of C0VID-19 pandemic's impact presented unique challenges for
the Steam Plus program, all of which provided opportunities for growth and
improvement. Examples include, the district switching platforms from MS0 to
Zoom, scheduling uncertainty related to a phased return to in-person schooling
and Zoom fatigue amongst middle and high school students. To alleviate, The
Bass will work closely with the district to avoid conflicts and encourage cultural
organization practitioners and teachers to attend professional development
workshops. Additionally, attendance and participation was somewhat affected
by poor internet connections or multiple students sharing one device, exposure
to or positive C0VID-19 cases and virtual communication between teachers,
administrators and students.
Looking ahead towards the 2021 -2022 academic year, The Bass is excited to
manage another exciting and successful iteration of the STEAM Plus program. At
the time of this report, the Miami Dade County Public School's were still working
out the logistics of in-person and MS0 schooling. As such, The Bass is in
constant contact with partnering organizations to ensure all will be ready to
implement the program either virtually, or in person, or a hybrid of both. Plans
include a continued provision of STEAM Plus Kits, regular reporting, professional
development workshops and introductory meetings. Additionally, upon review of
evaluation data, improvements will be made in facilitating communication efforts
between cultural organization partners, teachers, parent/guardians, and
students. The Bass is proud to serve its community with the STEAM Plus program
with the continued support of the City of Miami Beach Commission, Mayor Dan
Gelber and M-DCPS.

For the 2020-2021 year, the following key achievements were accomplished through
the STEAM Plus program: * Served 4,310 students (about 64% of the public school student
population of Miami Beach) which represents a 47% increase compared
to the total number of students served in 2019-2020. Total includes
ESOL and ESE participants in every school. * Facilitated 31 partnerships, serving 209 classes and 191 classroom
teachers. * 1,127 hours of instruction. * COVID-19 response included transition to virtual learning for the full
academic year, featuring STEAM Plus Kits for all participating students
and teachers. Kits were catered for each cultural partnership and
included all supplies required to ensure student access whether at
home or in-school. * Professional development courses provided teachers with an enhanced
understanding of how to incorporate the arts through STEAM and utilize
technology skills for online learning. * Virtual field trips allowed students to explore local cultural institutions
from the safety of their homes/classrooms, allowing them a creative
escape into gardens, exhibitions and concert halls. * Facilitated mentoring partnership between Miami Beach Senior High
Robotics Club students and Miami Beach Nautilus Middle school
students. * The Bass, Miami City Ballet, The Wolfsonian -FIU and Young Musicians
Unite produced innovative virtual culminating events which provided
moments for students to showcase their work to parents and families
and created space for students to take pride in their achievements
during unprecedented times. * Student achievements included several students participating in an
authentic assessment showcase , displaying their artwork at Miami
Dade College North for the Miami Dade County STEAM Expo and in local
South Florida galleries. Additionally, ten students received placement in
Miami City Ballet's after-school program. * Over 45 local teaching artists and or/performers were supported by

institution? What about having an

presence and promoting the program?
(Media releases would be needed of

The only challenges were related to the
virtual implementation because of COVID.
I imagine that the level of student
interaction and engagement next year
when we are all physical in the classroom
will be higher. However, overall the
program was fantastic.

I am writing this letter in support of the FIU Jewish Museum partnership in the STEAM Plus Program with
Miami Beach Fi en berg Fisher K-8. I am a teacher who facilitated this program with my 6th and 7th grade
students. I was able to work with Luna Goldberg who set up everything and coordinated our virtual
visits with the artist, Beatriz . These ladies developed a strong curriculum which addressed all aspects of
STEAM and maintained a conducive relationship for learning and made my students extremely
comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas . Even though all sessions were virtual, my students were
able to get the full experience of the program. We were taken on a virtual field trip and given the history
of the museum . Then, my students were exposed to different artists who work with stained glass and
viewed many pieces of artwork. Finally, for the culminating activity, the students were encouraged to
create their own masterpiece with the materials provided. Not only were my students totally engaged in
working on their creations, but the exposure to the Jewish culture and the significance of the designs in
the stained-glass windows was captivated and transferred to their pieces . Often , in the classroom, we
are forced to teach, teach, teach with no time for creativity and fun. This program allowed my students
to learn something new which has relevance to their community and enjoy the process at the same
time. We are looking forward to maintaining this partnership for the future and recommend this

schools. You continue to make an impact on the quality of life of our Miami Beach children and
future citizens by supporting our schools through the STEAM plus program. Miami Beach
Fienberg/Fisher K-8 has benefited from working with different partnerships for the lastthree
years. Thank you for your support of Miami Beach Fienberg/Fisher K-8 through the STEAM plus
program.
Koren Illa from the Bass Museum has been an essential part of bringing together the vision of
the STEAM plus program. As the STEAM Coordinator at Miami Beach Fienberg/Fisher K-8, I
have been able to witness how the STEAM plus program brings opportunities for the children of
Miami Beach to experience a connection to the real world by working with partnerships like
Young Musicians Unite, the New World Symphony, FIU-Wolfsonian, the Jewish Museum of
South Florida, and the Bass Museum.
The partnerships were able to connectto our students by having virtual visits. They would
prepackage and send ahead of time any supplies needed for the standards driven STEAM
lessons given by the teachers. Students learning from home, or the school site were given the
opportunity to virtually meet and learn from local artists. It is amazing to see the joy in
children when they are learning! It is important to provide our students with cultural and
academic opportunities. Please continue to support our Miami Beach schools!

I want to take a moment to thank you for the generous S. T .E .A.M . + program sponsorship
provided to the students at Treasure Island Elementary School. As the S.T.E.A.M Liaison, I
have had a pleasure to work with amazing individuals, not only with our teachers, but also the
wonderful S.T.E.A.M. + partner teachers.
Ms. Shelly from the Miami City Ballet was amazing at capturing the Kindergartners focus and
taught them content aligned mathematics and science standards through music and dance.
Anamaria Correa ensured the Miami City Ballet program ran smoothly and was available at all
times. Our 5th graders expressed themselves by creating science zines using artistic techniques
and science content standards taught by Ms. Leila Thompson from the Wolfsonian Museum.
Our 4th graders explored problem solving skills in both math and science with the use of
technology and created 3D works with our partner teacher Mr. Hickey. Finally, Ms . Illa was a
pleasure to work with, she facilitated communication with all partners, and our 2nd and 3td grade
students loved creating sculptures and competing in a STEAM challenge. Our students were
always engaged in all the interactions. These interactions helped instill a love for exploration,
develop confidence in all subject areas, and build real world connections.
Treasure Island Elementary school students, teachers, staff, administrators , and parents
appreciate the wonderful emiching sponsorship opportunity provided by the S, T, E, A, M, +
program. We thank you for your ongoing support and we hope that with your help, we will
continue to expand our STEAM program and once again earn Gold Designation for the 2021-
2022 school year. We look forward to next year's activities.

Dear City of Miami Beach
Our school has participated in the amazing STEAM PLUS program with the BASS Museum for a
few years now. The program is one of the most expected extracurricular activities for children
and teachers. The children, teachers, and parents all work together to make the experience a
more fulfilling and engaging one for all stakeholders .
Not every day, children in our schools get the chance to mingle and learn from professional
artists and work with them, while developing and producing multimedia projects that bring
them closer to real world issues and the possible solutions.
This program allows children to become part of their world in a more active and responsible
manner; no other program in my opinion has such a far-reaching and positive impact on the
children.
Thanks so much for all that is given to our students, we truly hope this program expands and
continues to illuminate the minds and hearts of our students; at the end we all try to develop
the goodness in all of them and prepare productive members of society.

First off, I would like to say thank you so much for providing our school with such an awesome
collaborative program! The STEAM Plus Program has been such a tremendous success with our
students and families. It has given our school a way to connect with the surrounding
community. Personally, my students were able to collaborate with The Bass Museum. They
absolutely LOVED It! The Bass Museum not only provided and worked with our students, but
they also collaborate with the teachers to make sure that they create projects that were rightly
aligned with the current curriculum being taught. My students were able to spend time creating
amazing projects that were connected to a need in the community around them. They were
able to see a real-world problem affecting their environment and think of ways to help. I hope

THE BASS
MUSEUM OF ART
Using contemporary art as a catalyst
for learning, STEAM students created
works which were later exhibited
virtually and entered in district wide
competitions. Students worked
together to solve world problems
relevant to Miami Beach like COVID-19 ,
climate change, sea level rise and
water pollution while creating art.
Using the materials provided in their
STEAM kits like diode lights, electrical
wiring, oil pastels, modeling clay , to
design and create multidimensional
sculptures and kinetic STEAM journals
that light up once activated. Students
participated in our STEAM Labs,
learning about native south Florida
plants and different animal/plant
species. The student's visited The
Bass virtually, touring our galleries and

species, which made me look at the many manatees
and iguanas I see around Miami
Beach differently.

so they did most of the work themselves, except for

It was helpful to work with the teaching artist. She
was positive and encouraging with my students. My

project with an art outlet.

HackShack's mission is to
inspire curiosity and spark
creativity through technology
and play. In its digital sandbox,
kids play with robotics, coding,
design and learn critical
thinking skills in a
team-oriented environment.
HackShack offered labs where
kids explored technology to
learn critical thinking and
problem-solving skills.
Throughout the partnership
students learned how to
design for print, web and
prototyping (in 3D).

HELPING HANDS
(Formerly Miami Beach Bots)
Participating students received an
Elenco Snap Circuits Jr. set to do
simple electronic projects -30
pieces that snap together -while
being mentored by the Miami Beach
Senior High Helping Hands mentors.
Helping Hands mentors later
introduced CAD [Computer Assisted
Design] to ready students to use 30
printers to produce the work they
created. Students learned various
STEAM skills, specifically,
electronics, engineering, and more
creative art skills such as 30 design
and 30 printing.

JEWISH MUSEUM OF
SOUTH FLORIDA-FIU
In this partnership, students were
introduced to the history of the
Jewish Museum of Florida-FILI, and
how the building serves as an artifact
in retelling the history of Florida's
Jewish community. Students were
exposed to the narratives embedded
within the Museum's stained-glass
windows, and how these
architectural features were used to
preserve religious values and cultural
traditions. They learned about artists,
who through time, have used stained
glass and collage to create
narrative-based imagery. Drawing
inspiration from these artists,
students experimented with
materials to create a collage project
based on their own personal history.

Jewish history and stained glass and ways
it forms as long as the stories it tells.

Students who lived near the Jewish museum
had a new perspective on this historic
building after learning about how the
windows were designed once AC was added
to the building. They felt more connected to
the history of their city.

MIAMI BEACH
BOTANICAL
GARDENS
The curriculum taught by Sanna, Head
Gardener of MBBG, to the 2nd grade
classes of Biscayne Elementary included
how to plant and care for plants and the
relationship of plants, animals and
humans. We planted seeds together over
Zoom, learned how to care for them for
the following months and realized how
important plants are in keeping our own
urban environment healthy as well as
creating different habitats for different
wildlife. The students learned multiple
lessons on how plants, animals and
humans interact with and depend on
each other and their environment to
satisfy their basic needs. It's up to us to
create a more beautiful world!

MIAMI CITY BALLET
Miami City Ballet Community
Engagement dance instructors
integrated dance as an enhancement
to academic subjects in an effort to
build culture and support social
emotional competencies and be part
of arts learning through
interdisciplinary experiences. STEAM
subjects were applied during
interactions with the students in the
program, with the help of classroom
teacher-partners who
enthusiastically provide what that
content is in accordance with their
units of study. Students learned
about the many careers in
production, costume design,
organizational leadership, dance,
architecture and cultural history.
Partnerships ended with a virtual
culminating showcase for family and
friends to see all that was taught
throughout the partnership.

The whole Miami City Ballet team is amazing. Very
professional, well prepared and a pleasure to

They do an amazing job at integrating other
subjects in their dance moves. Students and
families are very happy when their child is given
an opportunity to continue to work with the Miami
City Ballet.

and hear their responses. The Kindergarten
students loved dancing with Ms. Kelly. They

MIAMI NEW DRAMA
Miami New Drama offered the
MasterMiND Youth: Technical Theater
& Design Intensive for Miami Beach
Sr. High students. Interactions were
led by professional theater
technicians and educators to cover
topics such as light board
programming, computer-simulated
3-D visualization, computer-aided
drafting for costumes, lighting, and
sets, projection mapping and media
servers, and sound design and
engineering. The virtual classes
culminated in a virtual "tech fair"
field trip to the Colony Theatre where
students were able to see how all of
these pieces work into a real-life
theater and event setting. Students
learned how technology assists the
artistic design process as well as see
direct real-world applications for
learning science, technology, and
mathematics within a creative and
inspiring environment.

We got to speak to professionals from all
ranges in the field, from those who work
on big expensive broadway shows, to
professionals at our local theaters, and all
of them were just as kind and open with
us regardless. I learned so much, and they
were so happy to answer questions and
assist any way they could.

NEW WORLD
SYMPHONY
The partnership began with this
year's concert, Voices of Nature. The
concert focused on the connections
between music, nature and climate
change. The concert introduced
major orchestral works and
composers. A program study guide
was sent in advance to all
participating classes. Subsequent
classroom interactions followed up
the themes from the concert and
engaged students to think of place,
music, and the ecology. Students
were able to ask questions to three
teaching artists who also
demonstrated musical excerpts on
their respective instruments. A final
interaction focused on programmatic
music and its early roots in
imitating nature.

FIU
Through STEAM Zine students
learned how to find and interpret
scientific research (about
greenhouse gas emissions, for
example, looking at current
emissions data and the impacts of
mass transportation); how to apply
that research to their own lived
experiences; how to express
research findings in relatable stories;
and how to storyboard, design, and
create a zine using found and
original artwork that aligns with the
climate-related story they're telling.
Students gain an understanding of
how scientific research connects to
their lives, and they will gain the
capacity to address urgent matters
as problem-solvers.

YOUNG MUSICIANS
UNITE
Young Musicians Unite (YMU) equips
schools with trained instructors, lesson
plans, instruments and all the necessary
resources for a vibrant music education.
YMU provided a variety of masterclasses
that introduced students to world
renowned bands, making emphasis in
one of the most influential bands of all
time, The Beatles. It examined the
contributions in the 1960s and how they
were integral part of the development of
counterculture and popular music's
recognition as an art form, since they
incorporated elements of of classical
music and traditional pop in innovative
ways; the band later explored musical
styles ranging from ballads and Indian
music to psychedelia and hard rock.
While the primary focus of YMU courses
is on A for the Arts, all 5 STEAM
standards can be reached throughout
the duration of a YMU course, aiding
schools in achieving their
STEAM designation .
