SUBJECT: City of Miami Beach Continues Designation as a StormReady® Community
The purpose of this L TC is to advise you that the City of Miami Beach has earned its
StormReady® re-certification from the Miami Office of the National Weather Service
(NWS).
StormReady® is a national community preparedness program that recognizes
communities that are best able to prepare for and address all types of severe weather.
The program focuses on communication and mitigation as well as community
preparedness. To achieve and maintain StormReady® status, a city must have a
comprehensive multi-hazard emergency operations plan supported by a solid
communication network.
Through efforts led by the Fire Department Division of Emergency Management, Miami
Beach demonstrated that we meet the following requirements:
• Have a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center;
• Employ multiple methods to receive and disseminate severe weather warnings
and information for the public;
• Promote the importance of public readiness;
• Maintain a formal hazardous weather action plan, including severe weather
spotter training for members of the community;
• Conduct periodic exercises and drills;
• Maintain a continued and active relationship with the local NWS office.
Miami Beach was first fully StormReady® certified in 2011. Recognition is maintained for
3 years and is renewed by proving that we continue to meet NWS standards. The
designation is an important step in improving our rating under the National Flood
Insurance Program's Community Rating System (CRS) which helps qualify the City for
certain insurance discounts, which are passed along to property owners in Miami Beach.
