LTC 080-2022 Art in Public Places Committee Motions - February 15, 2022March 2, 2022 080-2022 MIAMI BEACH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER NO. LTC# LETTER TO COMMISSION TO : Honorable Mayor Dan Gelber and Members of the City Commission FROM: Rafael E. Granado, City Clerk DATE: SUBJECT : Art in Public Places Committee Motions -February 15, 2022 The purpose of this letter to the Mayor and Commission is to provide an update regard ing the motion made during the February 15, 2022 Art in Public Places Committee ("AIPP ") meeting: Motion to recommend placement of The Bass Museum of Art 'New Monuments' commission, entitled I am here: Translation of Mystic Symbols in an Age of New Subjectivity by Miami Beach based artist Charo Oquet, in Collins Park. 'New Monuments ' is an initiative presented by The Bass Museum of Art, by adding a fifth plinth to Collins Park and calling for artists to propose a temporary new monument. The Bass' curatorial team selected Miami Beach based artist Charo Oquet to realize a work that will be on view beginning March 17, 2022-January 31, 2023. The Bass pays for all costs relating to the project including production costs , engineering, installation and maintenance, as well as an artist fee of $5,000. The proposed work draws on images and rhythms from individual and collective rituals and ceremonies of the Caribbean diaspora. Situated at the intersection of creativity and healing, the work poses an interpretation of Miami's intersectional history and an offering to the future to spark healing between communities. The monument will be fabricated from flat metal cut pieces and curved metal pipes, cut and assemble in a four-sided sculpture . Combining symbols and references from across time and cultures, Oquet's work intends to evoke complex emotions, thought and introspection as the viewer reconfigures their own intuitions, desires, values and fantasies of exchange and relation. The above motion was approved unanimously. Art in Public Places Committee members present included Michael McManus, Aaron Resnick, Esq., Megan Riley, Dr. Yolanda Sanchez and Nick D'Annunzio.
