LTC 095-2022 Miami-Dade County Beach Erosion Control and Hurricane Protection Project UpdateMIA/V~IBEACH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER NO. LTC# LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Honorable Mayor Dan Gelber and Members of the City Commission FROM : Alina T. Hudak, City Mana ~ DATE: March 8 , 2022 SUBJECT: Miami-Dade County Beach Erosion Control and Hurricane Protection Project Update The purpose of this L TC is to provide an update on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USAGE) beach renourishment project. This $40,468,000 .000 project is fully funded by the federal government and will address the erosional hotspots in the vicinity of 64th Street, 55 th Street, 46 th Street and 27th Street. The entire project is anticipated to be completed in phases throughout 2022 and 2023 . Mobilization of Segment 1 addressing the vicinity of 64th Street began in January 2022 . Mobilization included preparing the staging area in Allison Park and preparing the truck access lane through the dune. The contractor has recently advised that there is an unanticipated truck shortage for sand delivery, and the project at 64th street has temporarily stopped . Demobilization is underway, which includes removing vehicle mats from the beach and removing heavy machinery. The staging area at Allison Park will continue to be fenced and the office trailers within the staging area will remain. The contractors are preliminarily planning to resume operations in May, when they anticipate trucks to be available . The contractors are proposing to work on the 64th Street segment and 46 th Street segment simultaneously to reduce impacts to the overall project timeline . Below is the updated proposed timeline: 64th Street Segment: February 2022 (with delays through May 2022) to September 2022 55 th Street Segment: September 2022 to January 2023 46th Street Segment: May 2022 to September 2022 27 th Street Segment: January 2023 to July 2023 This project is vital for the integrity of our beaches and the protection of upland properties by reducing the impact of storms and sea level rise over time . A multi-departmental staff team, led by the Environmental Resources division, has worked diligently with the USAGE and the contractor to minimize disruption. Staff continues to communicate updates to adjacent property owners, neighborhood and building associations, and concessionaires .
