LTC# LETTER TO COMMISSION TO : Honorable Mayor Dan Gelber and Members of the City Commission FROM: Alina T. Hudak, City Manager 'a Ll=9 ~U. ~ 7 AE29EF3401349E DATE: May 26, 2022 SUBJECT: NORTH BEACH OCEANSIDE PARK BEACHWALK UPDATE The purpose of this L TC is to update the Mayor and City Commission regarding the progress of the North Beach Oceanside Park Beachwalk project, the final segment of the City's Beachwalk system. It gives me great pleasure to announce that this segment of the beachwalk is substantially complete. The City, some years ago, saw an aging boardwalk in constant need of repair and maintenance, and had the foresight and vision to see a new oceanfront promenade, stretching the full length of our city. Today, that vision is a reality. This Friday, May 27, the contractor will commence with the removal of the construction fencing, making this stunning segment available for the use and enjoyment of our residents, ahead of the Memorial Day holiday weekend. This segment of the Beachwalk runs along the eastern edge of North Beach Oceanside Park from 79 th Street to 87th Street. With the completion of this portion of the Beachwalk, there are now more than seven miles of oceanfront promenade that connects the entire city from South Pointe through North Beach, to the northern limits of the City. The City's Beachwalk system is part of the larger East Coast Greenway, a walking and biking route stretching over 3,000 miles from Maine to Key West. This system of pedestrian and bike paths promotes alternative transportation and connects the community to parks, cultural institutions, and business centers. The final project includes a 25-foot-wide, on-grade paver pathway, turtle-friendly lighting, dune improvements and salt-tolerant vegetation The administration is planning a formal ribbon cutting event and will be scheduling a date in the coming days.
