SUBJECT: Miami-Dade County Beach Erosion Control and Hurricane Protection Project Update
The purpose of this L TC is to provide an update on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USAGE)
beach renourishment project. This $40,468,000.000 project is fully funded and managed by the
federal government and will address the erosional hotspots in the vicinity of 64 Street, 55" Street,
46 Street and 27" Street. The entire project is anticipated to be completed in phases throughout
2022 and 2023.
• Beach renourishment is underway for Segment 1 on 64" Street in the vicinity of Allison
Park
• Mobilization is underway for Segment 3 addressing the vicinity of 46" Street. Mobilization
includes preparing the staging area in Indian Beach Park and the truck access lane
through the dune.
• The contractor has advised the City this week that sand placement will begin next week,
June 13, from the south end of Segment3 between_439 and_46 Street, working south to
north in 500 foot segments to minimize disruption to concessionaires and beach goers.
A project advisory has been sent to the community and the beachfront concession operations
have been advised. Sections of the beach undergoing active construction will be closed to ensure
public safety. As sections are completed, they will be opened for access. The contractors have
estimated that the south section of the segment will take approximately two months to complete
provided there are no unprecedented delays. City of Miami Beach staff is working closely with
USAGE and the contractors to provide the most up to date information.
As advised through LTC in March, the contractors are proposing to work on the 64" Street
segment and 46" Street segment simultaneously to reduce impacts to the overall project timeline.
Below is the updated timeline provided by the contractors:
• Segment 1: 64 street Segment: May 2022 to December 2022
• Segment 2: 55 Street Segment: November 2022 to March 2023
• Segment 3: 46" street Segment: June 2022 to May 2023 (From November 2022
to March 2023 the contractors will demobilize from this segment and will begin
mobilization on the 27 Street Segment. On March 2023 the project will resume in
this segment).
• Segment 4: 27" Street Segment: November 2022 to April 2023
This project is vital for the integrity of our beaches and the protection of upland properties by
reducing the impact of storms and sea level rise over time. A multi-departmental staff team, led
by the Environmental Resources Management division, has worked diligently with the USAGE
and the contractor to minimize disruption. The USAGE, contractor, and staff continues to
communicate updates to adjacent property owners, neighborhood and building associations, and
concessionaires.
