SUBJECT: The Florida Heiken Children's Vision Program in Partnership with Miami
Beach Parks and Recreation
The purpose of this L TC is to inform the Mayor and Commission of the partnership
between the Florida Heiken Children's Vision Program and the Miami Beach Parks and
Recreation Department.
This past summer, the Florida Heiken Children's Vision Program visited 5 of our summer
camp sites and offered eye exams and glasses, when necessary, at no cost to our 2022
Miami Beach Summer Camp participants. A licensed optometrist administered a
comprehensive eye exam which included a thorough examination of the child's vision,
eye health, and prescription information needed for eyeglasses, if it benefited the child.
A total of 276 Miami Beach summer camp participants were examined and 95 students
were prescribed eyeglasses. The Parks and Recreation Department recognizes the
importance of ensuring eye health amongst children and its significance in academic
success. We look forward to providing similar services to the community in the future.
