Subject: Miami Beach Adult and Community Education Job Fair
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to advise you that the City's Office of Organizational
Development and Performance Initiatives is collaborating with Miami Beach Adult and
Community Education Center and CareerSource South Florida (CSSF) to sponsor a bi-annual
adult job fair for students attending the Miami Beach Adult and Community Education Center
and the greater Miami Beach community on Wednesday, November 30th 2022 at the Fienberg-
Fisher K-8 Gym, from 5:30-7:00pm (see attached flyers).
The Adult Job Fair is an extension of the City's existing partnership with the Miami Beach Adult
and Community Education Center to provide FREE English for Speakers of Other Languages
(ESOL) and General Education Development (GED) classes to Miami Beach residents. At the
July 28,2021 Commission meeting, the City approved a program to support Miami Beach adult
education students by providing a $30 scholarship to cover the registration fee to participate in
an ESOL or GED class. At the June 22, 2022 Commission meeting, the City approved an
increase in funds for a total annual amount not to exceed $17,700.
The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course is designed to provide English
language and literacy instruction for English language learner adults whose first language is
other than English and who are non-literate or semi-literate in their home language, in order to
increase their ability to communicate in English. The instructional focus is to prepare adult
learners to use English for entering the career and technical and/or postsecondary education ,
employment, and participation in civic life.
The GED course of instruction prepares students for academic and personal success through
obtaining the necessary skills required to pass the official GED test and earn a State of Florida
High School Diploma. This program strives to motivate students not only to obtain the diploma
but also to utilize the acquired skills in the workforce and to achieve career and job placement
success.
CareerSource South Florida is engaging local area businesses to participate in this job fair to
connect community members seeking jobs with employers seeking to hire. Interested Miami
Beach businesses may register through CSSF by the deadline.
