Subject: City of Miami Beach Dual Enrollment Program Status Miami Beach Senior High
School and Miami Beach Nautilus Middle School
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to provide information on the status of our partnership
with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS), Florida International University, Miami-Dade
College, and University of Florida to increase dual enrollment courses at Miami Beach Senior
High School and Miami Beach Nautilus Middle School. The City partnered with the University of
Florida to expand course offerings at Miami Beach Senior High School beginning in 2022-23.
The chart below provides information on the number of course and class sections available, as
well as the financial savings to Miami Beach families since program inception of
$3,354,276.87 for those children choosing to enroll in dual enrollment classes funded by the City
offered at Miami Beach public schools.

Funding to support and expand the partnership in the 2022-23 school year includes an estimated
City contribution of $90,000 for instructor salaries and M-DCPS estimated contribution of $41,520
for textbooks. This partnership also supports class size reduction.
The dual enrollment program at Miami Beach Senior High School and Miami Beach Nautilus
Middle School allows eligible students to enroll in a college course and high school class
simultaneously. The credits the students earn are used towards both a high school diploma and
are acceptable towards a college Associate or Bachelor degree, or technical certificate. The
benefits of offering dual enrollment courses to high school and middle school students include:
• Saves students and parents money, as dual enrollment students are exempt from paying
application, registration, tuition, laboratory, and special fees if the classes taken are
being used toward high school graduation
• Enriches the course opportunities for outstanding high school / middle school students
• Shortens the time to attain a college degree
• Provides students with college credit that is transferable to a college or university
• Allows grades earned to become part of the students' permanent transcripts
