A RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF MIAMI LAKES, FLORIDA, URGING THE ADOPTION OF TERM LIMITS FOR THE CONSTITUTIONAL OFFICES MIAMI-DADE COUNTY WILL ELECT IN 2024; PROVIDING FOR INSTRUCTIONS TO THE TOWN CLERK; PROVIDING FOR INCORPORATION OF RECITALS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. REG/le Attachment F:\CLER\$ALL\LILIA\L TC's - Transmittal's\Miami Lakes\Resolution 23-1910 Town of Miami Lakes.docx RESOLUTION NO. 23-1910 A RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF MIAMI LAKES, FLORIDA, URGING THE ADOPTION OF TERM LIMITS FOR THE CONSTITUTIONAL OFFICES MIAMI-DADE COUNTY WILL ELECT IN 2024; PROVIDING FOR INSTRUCTIONS TO THE TOWN CLERK; PROVIDING FOR INCORPORA TION OF RECITALS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. (DIEGUEZ) WHEREAS, in November of 2018 Florida voters approved Amendment 10 to the Florida Constitution which, among other things, required all Florida counties to elect a Property Appraiser, Sheriff, Supervisor of Elections, Tax Collector, and Clerk of Courts; WHEREAS, the election of all these positions in Miami-Dade County will commence with the 2024 election cycle; WHEREAS, there are currently no term limits for these new and older elected offices; WHEREAS, term limits play an essential role in the democratic process by mitigating against the risk of excessive concentration of power by an elected official, forcing new perspectives, and increasing the number of participants in public life among other things; WHEREAS, virtually all other public offices in Florida carry term limits in part because of these important functions; WHEREAS, for the foregoing reasons the Miami Lakes Town Council ("Town Council") believes adoption of term limits for all county-wide constitutional offices is in the best interest of its residents and the public generally; and WHEREAS, the Town Council hopes other Miami-Dade municipalities will join in urging state and county officials to pass term limits for county-wide constitutional officers. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF MIAMI LAKES, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section1. Recitals. herein by this reference. Support for the Adoption and Implementation of Term Limits. The Town Council hereby urges our State Representatives, State Senator, and Miami-Dade County Commissioners to work together to pass and implement term limits for all county-wide constitutional offices. Section 3. Instructions to the Clerk. The Clerk is hereby instructed to provide a copy of this Resolution to the Town's State Representatives and State Senator, Miami-Dade County Commissioners, and to the Clerks of all other municipalities in Miami-Dade County to share with their elected officials. Section 4. Effective Date. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption.
