2023, Commission Meeting.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of SOBESafe, please find a resolution in advance of the Commission
Meeting of June 28, 2023, pertaining to:
R9 U DISCUSS AND TAKE ACTION REGARDING THE MOTION OF THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND
NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE, AT ITS MAY 23, 2023 MEETING,
RECOMMENDING THAT THE CITY COMMISSION ADOPT A RESOLUTION STRONGLY
URGING THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY COMMISSION TO MAINTAIN THE CURRENT
TEMPORARY OCEAN DRIVE PROMENADE AND TO ALLOW THE CITY TO PILOT AN
EXTENSION OF THE CURRENT PROMENADE DURING CERTAIN HOURS.

To the Mayor and Commissioners of Miami Beach:
We understand that at the Commission meeting of June 28, the Administration will
present County option 1, which calls for opening Ocean Drive to vehicular traffic from
Mondays to Saturdays from 6-11AM.
• W e support the County's option 1, with the exception of the provision for partial
opening of Ocean Drive to vehicular traffic.
• Most affected residents and most businesses agree with us
• The Staff acknowledge that this provision is not required to meet the County's
objectives:
o The County has one paramount goal: no traffic in Ocean Court (the alley)
except authorized service vehicles and specifically permitted autos. We
have no issue with this mandate
• Most businesses, and almost all the residents, do not see any benefit to this
provision.
• Since there is no safety purpose, and there is no demonstrated business
purpose, the provision for the partial opening of Ocean Drive to vehicular traffic
serves no useful purpose and should be removed.
• In fact, the provision is contrary to the interests of virtually all residents and most
businesses ... and would be greatly harmful to the progress that has been made
in elevating the area to residents, businesses and visitors.
• The Commission's Neighborhood Committee has referred to the full Commission
their clear support for the Promenade. In fact, they are inclined to extend it
further. Our recommendation is consistent with their action; the provision for
partial opening is not.
The Commission should support the progress that has been made by removing the
provision for vehicular traffic and keeping the PP closed.
