SUBJECT: Miami Beach Police Chief Promotional Ceremony
The purpose of this letter is to invite the Mayor and City Commission to attend the
swearing-in ceremony of Miami Beach Deputy Police Chief Wayne A. Jones on Thursday,
Aug. 31, 2023 at 10 a.m. in the New World Center (500 17 Street, Miami Beach).
Deputy Chief Jones will become the city's 21 Chief of Police. He succeeds Chief Richard
M. Clements, who will retire on Oct. 31 after more than three decades of distinguished
service.
Chief Jones has held every rank, including patrol officer, detective, sergeant, lieutenant,
captain, major and deputy chief over his 27-years of service with the Miami Beach Police
Department. Among his many accomplishments, he was instrumental in developing the
structure of what has become the nationally recognized Homeless Resource Officer
Program and he led the development of the department's Rapid DNA Pilot Program, the
manual for which became a national model. In addition, Chief Jones is credited for
boosting the recruitment of female police officers.
