City of Miami Beach, 1700 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach, FL 33139, www.miamibeachfl.gov OFFICE OF MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS, Tel: 305.673.7575 MEDIA ALERT Melissa Berthier, Email: melissaberthier@miamibeachfl.gov Matt Kenny, Email: mattkenny@miamibeachfl.gov FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Nov. 16, 2022 Miami Beach Hosts Scholastic Chess Tournament — The event will honor beloved Commissioner Mark Samuelian — Miami Beach, FL – The City of Miami Beach will host the first Mark Samuelian Scholastic Chess Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 20 in honor of former City Commissioner Mark Samuelian, who passed away earlier this year. “Mark was a former national chess master who loved sharing his knowledge of the game with local children whenever possible,” Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said. “He would be thrilled to know that future generations of young residents will carry toward this passion.” Samuelian, who was remembered as a superb colleague and dedicated public servant, was serving in his second term on the Miami Beach City Commission when he died on June 22. He combined the skills of a seasoned business executive with the experience of a proven community leader and brought three decades of business experience to the position. The chess tournament will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Scott Rakow Youth Center at 2700 Sheridan Ave. The event is open to aspiring chess players in grades K-12. Trophies will be awarded for up to 10 places per division. Admission is free, but all participants must preregister.
